Spicy Meatballs Megaways by Big Time Gaming

Even if you can’t take the heat, you have to find away to stay in the kitchen. The stove is about to explode Spicy Meatballs with win multiplier wilds all over the reels! Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a Master Chef or endure Gordon Ramsay’s insults to taste the winnings from Big Time Gaming’s latest online slot.

You’re the new chef in town and it’s about time people get a taste of your balls. I could go on and on about ironing your apron and grandma’s recipe, but let’s not waste any more time and see if I can’t persuade you to try and cook up a 55,600x win.

Yes, that’s insane and says a lot about this slot’s volatility. It’s definitely higher than the oven temperature in this August 2021 release. So without further ado and before you start playing with real money, here’s what you need to know.

Spicy Meatballs

Spicy Meatballs Megaways – What you need to know

Big Time Gaming has pushed another boundary for their standard layout that we all know by now by adding a spicy element to the mix. I will talk more about that further down so don’t you go anywhere. I promise that you will know everything you need to know by the end of this review.

PROS:

  • Megaways with up to 117,649 ways to win is always a pro in my book. It’s no wonder other game providers are paying Big Time Gaming to use this mechanic in their slots.
  • The win potential is crazy in Spicy Meatballs, but with great win potential comes high volatility.
  • Super exciting free spins round with unlimited wild multipliers.

CONS:

  • Megaways is an awesome mechanic but it can also be frustrated sometimes. Especially when it shows that you hit a spin with 117,649 ways to win and didn’t.
  • I would have loved to see a bonus-buy function on this game. It felt like forever before I hit free spins when I was testing the slot.
  • Time-wasting animation after losing spins are no fun to watch.

Spicy Meatballs Megaways – Theme and background

In case I haven’t been clear enough already, Spicy Meatballs is all about the stove in the kitchen. The temperature’s rising, and tonight for the first time, it’s gonna start raining balls. It’s raining balls, hallelujah. It’s raining balls… or was it the weather forecast? Cloudy with a chance of meatballs.

You can tell from the music, which you’ll probably wonder where you’ve heard before, that this is all about the Italian meatballs and not the Scandinavian ones you eat after a day of shopping for furniture in IKEA.

Spicy Meatballs Megaways – Gameplay

Megaways is awesome! It’s definitely one of my favourite game mechanics. Symbols will be of different sizes to illustrate that there are thousands of ways to win, in this case up to 117,649. Instead of having to memorize an intricate web of paylines, you just need matching symbols on at least three reels in a row, starting from the one furthest left.

Winning symbols are removed and new ones fall down to take their place, giving you the possibility to win multiple times on a single spin. Which you will have to do to get to the free spins, but more about that in a second.

The background is nicely integrated into the gameplay in Spicy Meatballs Megaways. You’ll be playing on an oven with pots over reels 2, 3, 4, and 5. On occasion, these pots boil over, and a spicy meatball jumps out of a pot and on onto the reel below.

Once at the top of a reel, the meatball becomes a wild multiplier starting with 1x. If you get another winning combination or combinations, the meatball falls down and for every row it drops its win multiplier increases by 1.

Unfortunately, you can only have two meatballs active at the same time. It would have been more fun to see all four active at the same time, but since this is Megaways, you’d end up witting max win way too frequently for any casino to offer this slot.

Spicy Meatballs Megaways – Free spins feature

Since there are no scatters or special free spins symbols in the game, you have to rely on winning multiple times on a single spin to trigger free spins. To be precise, you have to get five wins on a spin to trigger 8 free spins. Every additional win after five gives you an extra free spin.

The game is played exactly the same with a key ingredient being a bit different. The pots on top of the stove shows the win multiplier counter and if you already had one meatball used more than once, then it will start from whatever multiplier it was on last.

For example, let’s say that you hit a winning spin. All multipliers start from 1x, but you trigger a chain reaction of 3 wins. This means that that meatball will start from 3x next time it falls down on its reel. The multiple wins will also help with retriggering more free spins.

If you hit five wins on a single spin during free spins, then you get 4 extra free spins to start with and one extra for every consecutive win on the same spin. Got it? Good. Trust me, it’s not as complicated as it sounds.

Let’s just keep it simple and say that you want to win as many times as possible on every single spin and eventually you will hit the 55,600x your stake limit and the game will stop counting your winnings. Better?

Spicy Meatballs Megaways – My verdict

It’s hard to make a kitchen-themed slot interesting in my opinion. There’s not that much you can do unless you get really creative. The Aussies at Big Time Gaming really smashed their heads together for this one and came up with something that works, and more importantly, is exciting.

Since the max bet has been capped at 20, the grand total that can be won on a single spin is 1,112,000, which is a hell of a lot more than many jackpot slots out there have to offer. It may sound really intriguing for a lot of players, but this means a massive exposure to a lot of casinos.

I would like to see this slot in as many casinos as possible so more players will have a chance to try it, because it is fun to play, and I hope the exposure won’t drive casinos away from this game. So far, Big Time Gaming it quite well-represented in most major casinos, but smaller ones may struggle with adding this to their libraries. They might deem the risk too great.
